Our volunteer advisors return calls from 9am to 4pm Monday – Friday.

Welcome to Medicare Presentation​

This live, interactive class will give you an overview of Medicare and the different options you can choose for your specific needs. This will help you have a more productive appointment with a SHIBA advisor. If you are turning 65, new to Medicare or getting ready to retire, this is the place to start!

You will learn about:

·       The basic structure and choices within Medicare (Original Part A&B, Advantage Plans, Part D, Medigaps)

·       Enrollment timelines

·       Options to help pay for your Medicare costs

·       Prescription drug programs

·       How to watch for and prevent Medicare fraud

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (January 1 – March 31, 2026)

If you are in a Medicare Advantage Plan you can:                                                      

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan from Jan 1 – March 31, 2026
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare. (However, medical underwriting may be required if you want to enroll in a Medicare Supplement/Medigap policy).  You will also be able to join a separate Medicare drug plan.

My Advantage Plan or my Part D drug plan is Ending beginning January 1, 2026 –

You have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)!

  • From December 8, 2025 through February 28, 2026, you are allowed to change your Medicare health and drug coverage.
  • If you do not enroll in new coverage, you will be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A & B). You will not be automatically enrolled in a Part D drug plan. (SHIBA advisors can help you find a drug plan.)

Do I qualify for financial assistance with Medicare?

The Medicare Savings Programs (MSP) (Effective April 1, 2025)

If you qualify, the Medicare Savings Programs may help cover:

  • Part A premiums • Medicare copayments • Part B premiums • Medicare deductibles

INCOME less than:

Single person $1,820 per month ($21,840 per year)

Couple $2,453 per month ($29,436 per year)

NOTE: There is no resource/asset test for the MSPs. This means you won’t be asked to verify any resources, such as bank account balances.

Extra Help (also called Low-Income Subsidy or LIS) (Effective April 1, 2025)

If you qualify, Extra Help for Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage will help cover:

  • Premiums • Some copay costs • Deductibles • Donut hole/coverage gap

INCOME less than:

Single person: $1,976 per month ($23,712 per year) RESOURCES less than: $17,600

Couple: $2,664 per month ($31,968 per year) RESOURCES less than: $35,130 

NOTE: People who work may have even higher incomes than what these charts show. For both programs, resources do not include the home you live in and one car.

If your income is below these amounts, you may qualify for financial assistance. You can apply on your own or a SHIBA advisor can assist you.

Welcome! Extra Help With Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs, Social Security

I you qualify for the Medicare Savings Program (MSP), you will automatically be enrolled in the Extra Help program. MSP is through Washington State, Extra Help (LIS) is through Social Security.

What Is Shiba?

SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) is a free, confidential and impartial counseling resource sponsored by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner. Volunteer advisors will help you understand your rights and options and offer up-to-date information so that you can make an informed decision concerning your health insurance needs.

SHIBA volunteers are highly trained to counsel Medicare-eligible residents of all ages regarding choices, options, and problems with private health insurance, affordable prescription drugs, and Medicare.

Help your friends, neighbors and family learn more about health insurance and public programs! Many volunteer opportunities available! SHIBA volunteers receive 30 hours of basic health insurance training, monthly updates and ongoing supervision and support by a staff member of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
